I know these words don’t activate dopamine like “10x your MRR with this little known strategy” but ask any business owner how they accelerated their growth and exactly 0 of them will say “I 10x’d my revenue by doing this one thing I learned on TikTok.”

FOMO advertising is rampant and polluting our brains. It’s also distracting us from what actually works. The stuff that really creates business growth is forging strong strategic relationships that result in productive collaboration and custom strategies. This is so much better than cookie-cutter blueprints that are applied to businesses in bulk . . .

For the last 20 years I’ve worked at the intersection of brand strategy and technical SEO. And I kinda hate all the jargon, but my methods usually involve: brand strategy, positioning, offer building, SEO, content strategy, authority building, and the newest acronym GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

By biggest success was the inbound pipeline I grew for my former agency. It took years, but for a small 25 person agency we almost always had more inbound opportunities then we could handle. Our sales director’s schedule calendar was always booked and we shipped out numerous proposals per week. In fact, we subsisted on organic inbound leads alone for 15 years.

But I don’t actually recommend this method. You should always diversify. The issue that emerged from a robust pipeline, is we became addicted to winning new biz, and struggled to keep our existing clients feeling cared for. This created a roller coaster of exciting wins and depressing failures. (Luckily, we were able to refocus over time and put more energy into our relationships.)

So, yeah. I know a lot about building organic pipelines and I also know that you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. When you level up, your whole business needs to come along for the ride.

How to build a lead gen engine in your agency

Brand Positioning

Brand strategy and positioning is the foundation of marketing. So we have to start there. If your brand and positioning are not strong, marketing is a waste of money.

Quick Wins

The next step is identifying any quick wins. As someone with a technical SEO background there are almost always some areas in a brands web presence that have been neglected or ignored. In fact I was recently working with a client and we found a slew of inbound links from other websites that were going to 404 pages on their websites. Just redirecting those links boosted their rankings significantly and it only took a few hours.

Prioritization & Strategy

Once we’ve got the quick wins out of the way it’s time to start making a list of initiatives and strategies and prioritizing them. These are things that we can work on together and share responsibilities.
